RAF BROADWELL DISUSED 2011

RAF Broadwell is a disused airfield after WWII it closed in 1947 leaving behind the remains of structure for memories and history. Check more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Broadwell to find much more about the location of this airfield. RAF Broadwell was a small airfield for Airspeed AS.51 Horsa glider's, B-24 Liberators, de Havilland mosquito and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain.

Here's a image in B+W of RAF Broadwell in operation.

Airspeed AS.51 Horsa glider's in a line position on the main runway.

Also here are some screen shots from Google Earth of RAF Broadwell.
Same position as the B+W photograph above.
As I knew Google earth very well I can zoom out to see the end of the runway that got cut short.
A Satellite view of RAF Broadwell with both viewable runways.
RAF Broadwell is 2 miles north west of RAF Brize Norton.

Photography of RAF Broadwell

The Old ATCT(Air Traffic Control Tower) same structure as RAF Davidstow ATCT, even there must be thousands of these in the UK.

A closer shot of the structure's cat walk.

The right side door has been blocked by a tree with the wall stripped off.

The Back door of he structure easy to get inside over the rubble.

Another shot from the north east as the ATCT is almost surrounded by rubble.

Same shot of the tree next to the door in a wide open shot.

Again a shot of the tree and the right side of the ATCT.

A great shot from the front of the ATCT in a landscape position.

Same shot but in a portrait position filling the sky in. Also this image is my favourite because is a powerful respond to sadness as the structure just sitting there becoming part of nature.
Here's my modified image done on Photoshop CS5. This image has been edited to make it look like it was taken in the 80's because of the colour films. This photograph is digital taken by my Fujifilm digital camera.

This is the Disused tower surrounded by grass and growing trees.
Location: RAF Broadwell, Oxfordshire, England.
This is my first old photograph of another disused tower surrounded by grass and farm animals.
Location: RAF Davidstow, Cornwall, England.

Every ATCT have the same rooms and sometimes these rooms have old equipment not in use and sometimes wrecked by kids who take shelter during heavy rains.

Taken inside of the ATCT on the ground floor it's very dark in certain rooms. bright lights coming through the windows create good shots for photographs.
In each room was different to the next but it seems that I don't know what was in here which that this room has only have one window bringing in so much light from outside onto the floor.
This window is in the large room on the ground floor where I think that in this room were radio equipment to guide aircraft up and down on runways. It looks like that this window is from the old Pill boxes because of the way it was built.
Must be the toilets....

Stairs to the ground floor.

Ground and 2nd Floor.

Another empty room with light coming through the window also lighting up the wall with words says
"United We Stand Never To Fall"

The 2nd floor also the main room of the ATCT.

A great shot with the fields in the background and light coming through the windows.

A wall to window shot.

I wonder what's this little window for?

Another wall to window shot.

The entrance to the main room.

The tall window where the stairs are.

Another window near rubble.

The disused Runway

A portrait shot to get the whole gravel in.

This shot makes the runway looks dead with 67% grass overgrowing the tarmac.

Amazing shot of the runway near the road.

Another shot of the runway with a tire.

This shot has amazing depth of field and a great distant view of the runway.

Another good shot but with the camera lower to the ground.

Too close to the ground making the tarmac in good quality.

The tire in the centre.

Cloud cover the runway.

Cloud cover again with rain on approach.

The sun breaking through the clouds.

The overgrown grass covering the tarmac.

More of nature's pride in taking over.

A good shot and landscape of the whole runway.

Same shot but a lower view in the centre.

This shot was cool even my dad's idea I like the way he thinks of getting a angle and view of the runway.

Another shot of the runway in a portrait view.

The ATCT behind trees and fields making the structure more decayed.

I research a video of RAF Broadwell from youtube to find a Veteran who served there during the second world war. Here's the link -

These photograph were also for my college project known as the "Transformation Project" at North Star college in Swindon. The project is about transforming a image the way you want a bit like my previous projects I've done at Truro College in Cornwall it was called "Free Form Project" I get a camera and take photographs at of landscapes and combine them to my research of photographers who have done the same thing. The equipment I normally use are a borrowed camera from college or my own camera from home with my own tripod.

What Camera do I use
I use a Fujifilm finepix S1700 digital camera with 12 mega pixels, Fujinon lens 15x, Optical f=5.0-75.0mm, 1:3.1-5.6 this camera is like a small version of the Nikon and Canon SLR cameras. Very usable with high quality images and I use this camera all the time for my interests.

I use a tripod sometimes when needed and I go out depends on weather conditions.
